What Happens to Your Property Taxes When You Remodel?
Thinking about remodeling your home but wondering… what happens to your property taxes?
Here in California, the answer is: it depends on what you change.
Not every home improvement will make your property taxes go up.
Simple repairs and updates such as:
painting, replacing flooring, updating your kitchen or repairing your roof,
generally don’t affect your property taxes the same way as new construction.
But adding something new, like:
Adding a bedroom or bathroom
Making your home bigger
Building an ADU, guest house, mother-in-law suite
Adding a garage or pool
could increase your property taxes
And here’s something important to know:
That doesn’t necessarily mean the county will recalculate your entire home based on what it’s worth today.
Instead, they may look at the value of what you added and use that to calculate the additional property taxes.
If remodeling is in your future,
it’s a good idea to check how your specific project could affect your property taxes before you get started 🏡
Until the next one,
